Obesity and metabolism accelerate brain aging

Scientists warn that obese people with metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome, high blood sugar, high blood pressure) have an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, as well as decreased brain function, and the brain ages faster.

A research team from Harvard University in the United States conducted MRI(magnitude resonance imaging) and cognitive tests on more than 2,000 participants between the ages of 37 and 55. The MRI showed that obese people with metabolic disorders had reduced brain function compared to healthy participants. The brain had a smaller total volume due to metabolic abnormalities, and this indicates damage to the entire brain, leading to loss of neurons and supporting cells.

Cognitive tests also confirmed brain abnormalities in these individuals. They showed signs of slight damage to the brain’s white matter ( white matterwhite matter – one of the two – along with gray matter – basic components of the central nervous system. White matter is an important connective tissue in the brain and is associated with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease). The subjects scored poorly on a combination of tests of thinking skills, factual judgment, as well as tests measuring verbal memory, visual comprehension, spatial memory and abstract reasoning.

In order to prevent brain aging, it is necessary to improve lifestyle, first and foremost by maintaining a proper DIET and exercise.
